Submissions
The Zinnia Journal accepts poetry, prose, short stories, essays, photography, and art.
We seek writing from people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities. There is never any fee to submit. As The Zinnia Journal is run solely by a college student, we are unable to pay our contributors at this time but aim to do so in the future.
Previously published pieces are allowed; however, it is up to you to ensure that The Zinnia Journal has the right to publish this work and let us know where your work was first published for us to properly credit them.
Simultaneous submissions are allowed. If your work is accepted by another publication, please let us know immediately to pull your work and for us to congratulate you.
GUIDELINES
All submissions should be emailed to zinniajournal@gmail.com
- In the subject line, please list the submission genre(s) and your name
- include the title(s) of your work and a short third-person biography including your name/pseudonym, pronouns
- attach each piece separately in .doc, .docx or .pdf format
- content warnings (if applicable)

POETRY: up to 3 poems per submission
PROSE: up to 2 per submission, 2,500 words max
SHORT STORIES: up to 1 short story, 4,000 words max
ESSAYS: up to 1 essay, 4,000 words max
PHOTOGRAPHY/ART: up to 5 per submission, submit as .jpeg or .png form and provide titles for the piece(s)
If accepted, The Zinnia Journal reserves First Serial Rights and First Electronic Rights upon publication. If the work has been published previously, we ask for Second Serial Rights and electronic rights. Upon publication, rights will be reverted to the author. If your work is published elsewhere following publication in The Zinnia Journal, whether print or online, we ask that The Zinnia Journal be credited as the original publisher.
The Zinnia Journal believes that diversity is the foundation of creation. We highly encourage submissions from marginalized and underrepresented communities, with a commitment to providing a platform for every voice to be heard and celebrated. Each and every submission will be in safe hands and given all of our love. We know how vital having a place to start is, making us dedicated to publishing emerging writers. Submitting work for publication can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. The Zinnia Journal offers a welcoming, inclusive environment for your creativity to blossom. We are excited to read your work!
Pieces that are AI-generated will not be accepted.
Pieces that are overly graphic, violent, or sexual will not be considered.
Plagiarism will result in immediate rejection.
Pieces that promote hate or discrimination of any kind will not be considered. Any sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic or prejudiced themes in any way are unacceptable.
